Prayer

The Lord manifests himself to those who pause while in peace and humility of heart….

God, in order to be able to speak to the soul and fill it with the knowledge of his love, leads it to the solitude, detaching it from preoccupations of earthly things.  He speaks to the ears of those who are silent and makes them hear his secrets
(St. Anthony of Padua).

The Angelus

V.  The angel spoke God’s message to Mary.
R.  And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.  Hail Mary….
V.  “I am the lowly servant of the Lord:
R.  “Let it be done to me according to your word.”  Hail Mary….
V.  And the Word became flesh
R.  And lived among us.  Hail Mary….
V.  Pray for us, holy Mother of God,
R.  That we may become worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

Lord, fill our hearts with your grace: Once through the message of an angel, you revealed to us the incarnation of your Son; now, through his suffering and death, lead us to the glory of his resurrection.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
R.  Amen.

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.  Body of Christ, heal me.  Blood of Christ, drench me.  Water from the side of Christ, wash me.  Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

Good Jesus, hear me.  In your wounds, shelter me.  From turning away, keep me.  From the evil one, protect me.

At the hour of my death, call me.  Into your presence, lead me to praise you with all saints forever and ever.  Amen.

The Beatitudes

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.
Blessed are they who suffer persecution for justice’s sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when men reproach you and persecute you and, speaking falsely, say all manner of evil against you for my sake
.

Blessing

The Lord bless you and keep you!  The Lord let his face shine upon you and be gracious to you!  The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace! (Nm. 6:24-26).

Daily Prayer to the Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart of Jesus, today I wish to live in you, in your grace in which I desire at all costs to persevere.  Keep me from sin and strengthen my will by helping me to keep watch over my senses, my imagination, and my heart.  Help me to correct my faults which are the source of sin.  I beg you to do this, O Jesus, through Mary, your Immaculate Mother.  Amen.

Most merciful Jesus, lover of souls, I pray You, by the agony of Your most Sacred Heart and by the sorrows of Your Immaculate Mother, to wash in Your Most Precious Blood the sinners of the world who are now in their agony and who will die today.  Heart of Jesus, once in agony, have mercy on the dying.  Amen.

Easter

Family

O, dear Jesus, I humbly implore you to grant your special graces to our family.  May our home be the shrine of peace, purity, love, labor, and faith.  I beg you, dear Jesus, to protect and bless all of us, absent and present, living and dead.

O Mary, loving Mother of Jesus and our Mother, pray to Jesus for our family, for all the families of the world, to guard the cradle of the newborn, the schools of the young, and their vocations.

Blessed St. Joseph, holy guardian of Jesus and Mary, assist us by your prayers in all the necessities of life.  Ask of Jesus that special grace which he granted to you to watch over our home at the pillow of the sick and the dying so that with Mary and with you, heaven may find our family unbroken in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  Amen.

Friends

Guardian Angel

Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom God’s love commits me here,
Ever this day be at my side
To light, to love, to be my guide.

Hail, Holy Queen

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope.  To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.  To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.  Turn then, most gracious Advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us.  And after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill my heart with your holy gifts.  Let my weakness be penetrated with your strength this very day that I may fulfill all the duties of my state conscientiously, that I may do what is right and just.  Let my charity be such as to offend no one and hurt no one’s feelings, so generous as to pardon sincerely any wrong done to me.  Assist me, O Holy Spirit, in all my trials of life, enlighten me in my ignorance, advise me in my doubts, strengthen me in my weakness, help me in all my needs, protect me in temptations, and console me in afflictions.  Graciously hear me, O Holy Spirit, and pour your light into my heart, my soul, and my mind.  Assist me to live a holy life and to grow in goodness and grace.  Amen.

Holy Trinity

Glory be to the Father, who by his almight power and love created me, making me in the image and likeness of God.  Glory to the Son, who by his precious blood delivered me from hell and opened for me the gates of heaven.  Glory be to the Holy Spirit, who has sanctified me in the sacrament of baptism and continues to sanctify me by the graces I receive daily from his bounty.  Glory be to the three adorable persons of the Holy Trinity now and forever.  Amen.

I Met God in the Morning by Bishop Ralph Spaulding Cushman (1879-1960)

I met God in the morning
When my day was at its best.
His presence came at sunrise
Like a glory in my breast.
All day the presence lingered.
All day long he stayed with me,
And we sailed in perfect calmness
O’er a very troubled sea.
Other ships were blown and battered.
Other ships were sore distressed,
But the winds that seemed to drive them
Brought us a peace and rest.
Then I thought of other mornings
With a keen remorse of mind
When I, too, had loosed the moorings
And his presence left behind.
So I think I know the secret
Learned from many a troubled way:
You must seek him in the morning,
If you need him through the day!

Jesus Christ Crucified

My good and dear Jesus, I kneel before you, asking you most earnestly to engrave upon my heart a deep and lively faith, hope, and charity with true repentance for my sins and a firm resolve to make amends.  As I reflect upon your five wounds and dwell upon them with deep compassion and grief, I recall, good Jesus, the words the prophet David spoke long ago concerning you: “They have pierced my hands and my feet; they have counted all my bones.”

“Knots” Prayer from Between the lines… living in the open spaces

Dear God:
Please untie the knots
that are in my mind,
my heart, and my life.
Remove the have nots,
the can nots and the do nots
that I have in my mind.

Erase the will nots,
may nots,
might nots that may find
a home in my heart.

Release me from the could nots,
would nots, and
should nots that obstruct my life.

And, most of all,
Dear God,
I ask that you remove from my mind,
my heart, and my life all of the “am nots”
that I have allowed to hold me back,
especially the thought
that I am not good enough.
Amen.

Living Alone

Magnificat

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior because he has regarded the lowliness of his handmaid; for, behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed because he who is mighty has done great things for me; and holy is his name; and his mercy is from generation to generation on those who fear him.  He has shown might with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.  He has put down the mighty from their thrones and has exalted the lowly.  He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.  He has given help to Israel, his servant, mindful of his mercy even as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his posterity forever.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided.  Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.  O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me.  Amen.

Missionaries

Morning Prayer

O my God, I offer you all my prayers, works, and sufferings in union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the intentions for which he pleads and offers himself in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in thanksgiving for your favors, in reparation for my offenses, and in humble supplication for my temporal and eternal welfare for the conversion of sinners and for the relief of the poor souls in purgatory.  Amen.

Our Lady, Mother of God

We ask you, Our Lady, Mother of God, exalted above the choirs of angels, that you fill the vessel of our hearts with grace; that you make it shine with the gold of wisdom; that you make it resolute with the power of your virtue; that you adorn it with the precious stones of virtue (St. Anthony of Padua).

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Dearest Lady of Guadalupe, fruitful Mother of Holiness, teach me your ways of gentleness and strength.  Hear my prayer offered with deep-felt confidence to beg this favor…

O Mary, conceived without sin, I come to your throne of grace to share the fervent devotion of your faithful Mexican children who call to thee under the glorious Aztec title of “Guadalupe,” the Virgin who crushed the serpent.

Queen of Martyrs, whose Immaculate Heart was pierced by seven swords of grief, help me to walk valiantly amid the sharp thorns strewn across my pathway.  Invoke the Holy Spirit of Wisdom to fortify my will to frequent the Sacraments so that, thus enlightened and strengthened, I may prefer God to all creatures and shun every occasion of sin.  Help me, as a living branch of the Vine that is Jesus Christ, to exemplify His divine charity always seeking the good of others.

Queen of Apostles, aid me to win souls for the Sacred Heart of my Savior.  Keep my apostolate fearless, dynamic, and articulate to proclaim the loving solitude of Our Father in Heaven so that the wayward may heed His pleading and obtain pardon through the merits of your merciful Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Our Lady, Queen and Mother

My Queen!  My Mother!  I give myself entirely to you; and to show my devotion to you, I consecrate to you this day my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart, my whole being without reserve.  Wherefore, Good Mother, as I am your own, keep me and guard me as your property and possession.  Amen.

Parents

Most loving Father, the example of parenthood, you have entrusted our children to us to bring them up for you and prepare them for everlasting life.  Assist us with your grace that we may fulfill this sacred duty with competence and love.  Teach us what to give and what to withhold.  Show us when to reprove, when to praise, and when to be silent.  Make us gentle and considerate, yet firm and watchful.  Keep us from the weakness of indulgence and the excess of severity.  Give us the courage to be disliked sometimes by our children when we must do necessary things which are displeasing in their eyes.  Give us the imagination to enter their world in order to understand and guide them.  Grant us all the virtues we need to lead them by word and example in the ways of wisdom and piety.  One day with them, may we enter into the joys of our true and lasting home with you in heaven.  Amen.

Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, light; and where there is sadness, joy.  O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love.  For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.  Amen.

Prayer

O Sweet Jesus, I desire neither life nor death but your most holy will.  You are the one, O Lord, that I long for.  If it be your holy will to have me die, receive my soul and grant that, in you and with you, I may receive everlasting rest.  If it be your holy will to have me live longer upon this earth, give me the grace to amend the rest of my life and, with good works, to glorify your holy name.  Amen.

Priests

O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests, for your unfaithful and tepid priests, for your priest laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields, for your tempted priests, for your lonely and desolate priests, for your young priests, for your dying priests, and for the souls of your priests in purgatory.  Amen.

Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart of Jesus, today I wish to live in you, in your grace in which I desire at all costs to persevere.  Keep me from sin and strengthen my will by helping me to keep watch over my senses, my imagination, and my heart.  Help me to correct my faults which are the source of sin.  I beg you to do this, O Jesus, through Mary, your Immaculate Mother.  Amen.

The Sick

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the Sick, we turn to you in this time of illness.  O dearest Comforter of the Troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden.  Dear God, we place our worries in your hands.  We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servant to health again.  Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your holy will and know that whatsoever you do, you do for the love of us.  Amen.

Sickness

O Jesus, you suffered and died for us.  You understand my suffering.  Teach me to understand my suffering as you do, to bear it in union with you, to offer it with you to atone for my sins and to bring your grace to souls in need.  Calm my fears and increase my trust.  May I gladly accept your holy will and become more like you in trial.  If it be your will, restore me to health so that I may work for your honor and glory and the salvation of all.  Amen.

Solace

My good and dear Jesus, I kneel before you, asking you most earnestly to engrave upon my heart a deep and lively faith, hope, and charity with true repentance for my sins and a firm resolve to make amends.  As I reflect upon your five wounds and dwell upon them with deep compassion and grief, I recall, good Jesus, the words the prophet David spoke long ago concerning you: “They have pierced my hands and my feet; they have counted all my bones.”

Special Need

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I firmly believe that you are here and see me perfectly and that you observe all my actions, all my thoughts, and the most secret movements of my heart.  You permit me, a sinner, to remain in your presence.  It is your goodness and bounty which command me to come to you in this, my time of special need.  With confidence I pray that you will grant me this grace which I ask of you.  Amen.

Spiritual Communion

When unable to receive Holy Communion, it is a pious practice to make a Spiritual Communion.  Say the following prayer of St. Francis…

I believe that you, O Jesus, are in the most holy Sacrament.  I love you and desire you.  Come into my heart.  I embrace you.  Oh, never leave me.  May the burning and most sweet power of your love, O Lord Jesus Christ, I beseech you, absorb my mind that I may die through love of your love, who were graciously pleased to die through love of my love.  Amen.

Spouses for Each Other

Lord Jesus, grant that [name] and I may have a true and understanding love for each other.  Grant that we may both be filled with faith and trust.  Give us the grace to live with each other in peace and harmony.  May we always bear with one another’s weaknesses and grow from each other’s strengths.  Help us to forgive one another’s failings and grant us patience, kindness, cheerfulness, and the spirit of placing the well-being of one another ahead of self.  May the love that brought us together grow and mature with each passing year.  Bring us both ever closer to you through our love for each other.  Let our love grow to perfection.  Amen.

St. Anthony

St. Jude

St. Michael

St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.  May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.  Amen.

St. Monica

Steadfast Heart

Grant me, O God, a steadfast heart, which no unworthy thought can drag downward, an unconquered heart which no trial can wear out, an upright heart which no unworthy purpose may tempt aside.  Bestow upon me also, O Lord my God, understanding to know you, diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you, and faithfulness that may finally embrace you.  I ask this through Jesus, our Lord.  Amen.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving for a Favor Received

Thank you, O God, for hearing my prayer and granting my request.  Thank you for all the kindness you have shown me.  Thank you, Father, for your great love in giving me my life, for your great patience in preserving me despite my sinfulness, for your protection in the past, and for the opportunity to serve and honor you in the future.  Thank you, Lord Jesus, for keeping me numberless times from sin and death by the tolls of your life, the sufferings of your Passion, and by your victorious Resurrection.  Thank you, Holy Spirit of God, for bestowing so many graces upon my soul and for having so frequently renewed your life within me.  May my life from now on be a sign of my gratefulness.  Amen.

Vocations

Creator God, life is your gift to me.  Through Baptism, You invite me to share the gift of my life in service to others.  Be with me as I choose each day to show your presence in our world.  Give me the courage and generosity to respond to your love, to your call.  I pray especially for those who serve you as priests, brothers, sisters, deacons, and lay ministers.  Keep them close to you.  Open the minds and hearts of many other men and women that they may accept your challenge to build the Kingdom (Roseann Kasayka, OSF).
